Contents
The highly anticipated 2024 FAI World Drone Racing Championship (hereafter referred to as the “Championship”) will take place from October 31 to November 3 in Hangzhou, China. As the pinnacle of drone racing, this prestigious event will bring together the world’s top pilots, highlighting both the competitive spirit of the sport and China’s exceptional capability to host international aviation events with unmatched hospitality.
Championship Awards
Organized by the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC) under the professional guidance of the General Administration of Sport of China, the Championship promises to deliver a world-class spectacle for drone racing enthusiasts. Over the course of four competitive days, pilots will compete for the following titles:
- Overall Individual Champion
- Youth Champion (under 18)
- Women’s Champion
- National Team Champion
In addition to the coveted titles, generous cash prizes will be awarded to the winners to recognize their outstanding achievements.
Antonis Papadopoulos, President of the International Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM), expressed his enthusiasm for the event:
"We are thrilled to see this prestigious competition return to China. The strong collaboration between the ASFC and the General Administration of Sport of China ensures an extraordinary experience for fans and competitors alike. Drone racing is a sport that combines skill, precision, and inclusivity, offering equal opportunities for participants of all ages and genders to showcase their talent."
Competition Lineup and Requirements
This year’s Championship boasts an exciting lineup of participants. Each national team is allowed to send up to five pilots, including at least one female pilot, reinforcing the sport’s commitment to gender equality. Additionally, a wildcard system has been introduced, welcoming renowned pilots such as 2023 defending world champion MinChan Kim, adding even more excitement to the competition.
Drone racing captivates audiences with its unique blend of speed, skill, and technical mastery. During the event, pilots will maneuver radio-controlled multirotor drones around a closed circuit filled with challenging obstacles. The goal: navigate the course and cross the finish line as quickly as possible.
These drones are lightweight (weighing under 1 kg) and equipped with advanced onboard cameras that transmit real-time video footage to the pilots’ FPV goggles. This allows pilots to experience a cockpit-like view, enabling precise control of their drones. With speeds exceeding 160 km/h (100 mph), the competition demands exceptional reflexes and technical expertise, making it a true test of pilot skill and endurance.
Why Hangzhou?
Hangzhou, the host city for the Championship, is known for its stunning natural scenery, rich cultural heritage, and robust infrastructure. With a well-established reputation for supporting sports and aviation events, Hangzhou offers an ideal setting for this global gathering. Under the meticulous planning of the ASFC and the General Administration of Sport of China, the Championship is set to leave an indelible mark on fans and participants alike.
